I am not particularly strong when it comes to reading poetry.
In fact it took me three weeks to get through this 121 page (including forward and afterward) collection.

No idea why, but it's always been a hurdle for me. Rating likely reflects my problems and not the material.

Poe and I both appreciate a good rhyming poem. I found several new poems that I enjoyed.

For someone such as myself, who isn't a native English speaker, some of Poe's writing is a bit difficult to decipher. I read this book with the online oxford dictionary opened on my phone at all times.
I can deal with the "hath, thou, ye, thee, o'er" etc. but some of the vocabulary was a bit harder to grasp.. So I re-read a lot, but it was an absolute pleasure.

The short memoir at the beginning makes it easier to understand where all the melancholy he carried and wrote with came from. The poor man didn't have such an easy life.

Poe is one of my favourite poets and "Alone" my very favourite poem. It was such a pleasure to rediscover some of his writing and read pieces I hadn't stumbled across before. The author's use of language is beautiful but what I enjoy most is his sense of rythm. Some of these works, really have to be read aloud to be appreciated fully in my opinion.

I enjoyed his poetry in verse and prose equally and honestly, it had been a very long time since I felt such excitement when reading something. You can tell that Poe was a furious intellect, he seemed incredibly knowledgeable about so many subjects but more importantly his writing is simply haunting. What an inspiration..
