As typical with Nothomb, it as a quick read with a lot of tension. I was disappointed by the ending though, it seemed that the author got lazy at the end and betrayed her own work with a few undecisive pages.

The delivery was otherwise good, the idea of the book reminded me of the "Little Zaches, nicknamed Cinnaber" by E.T.A. Hoffmann.

Je trouve que l’histoire était un peu lente, l’action arrive tard et ne dure pas assez longtemps et, honnêtement, sans avoir jamais lu le livre avant, je sentais que cette fin allait arriver.

Se queda en un 3.5. Por una parte me ha encantado su forma de escribir y el problema que trata el libro, pero por otra, tiene algunas cosas un poco exageradas y, en mi opinión, se ha cargado un poco el final.

Blanche, appena sedicenne e già studentessa universitaria, è chiusa, introversa e ha sempre fatto fatica a integrarsi socialmente. Quando Christa, sua coetanea e compagna di università, le rivolge la parola, Blanche non riesce a crederci: Christa è bella, estroversa, brillante,  e capace di farsi amare da chiunque; in pratica il suo esatto opposto. Blanche si ritrova a desiderare spasmodicamente anche solo un briciolo della sua attenzione; e Christa lo sa, se ne compiace e trasforma l'amicizia che Blanche tanto anela in un rapporto impari, fatto di vessazioni e bullismo. Niente le sfugge: tutti difetti - grandi o piccoli, veri o presunti -  di Blanche diventano munizioni che Christa usa per renderla invisibile non solo socialmente, ma anche nella sua stessa casa (dopotutto Christa è la figlia che tutti i genitori vorrebbero). Ma Christa non è così sicura come ostenta, e nasconde un segreto.

Con uno stile incisivo e sardonico, Nothomb tratteggia magistralmente la fame di Blanche per l'amore, per l'amicizia, per il riconoscimento e l'accettazione sociale: Blanche è così verosimile da farmi venire un groppo alla gola, non potevo che non immedesimarmi in lei. Verosimile come il rapporto conflittuale tra le due ragazze: perchè, anche se Christa la tormenta e la ridicolizza qualunque volta ne ha l'occasione, è anche l'unico modo che Blanche ha per integrarsi, quindi si sente in debito (anche se Christa ha un secondo fine). E Christa ha bisogno di Blanche, perchè è molto più facile primeggiare quando il tuo "avversario" è socialmente emarginato. 

Il colpo di scena che arriva a circa due terzi del romanzo non è trascendentale o assurdo, ma rimane ben inserito nella realtà della storia:

Christa non è che una ragazzina ricca e viziata che sfrutta il buon cuore di genitori di Blanche per intascarsi i soldi che il padre le manda per pagare l'affitto, nonostante non le sia stato chiesto.

 

L'ultimo terzo del romanzo potrebbe non essere considerato soddisfacente, ma non è l'intento di Nothomb quello di presentare un finale infiocchettato, in cui il cattivo perde, i buoni vincono e le motivazioni di tutti risultano chiare e seguono un filo logico che esiste solo nella finzione. 

Come al solito, i romanzi brevi non mi soddisfano mai al 100%, anche se, in questo caso, la brevità gioca a favore della storia e dei personaggi: un centinaio di pagine in più l'avrebbero resa una lettura insostenibile.

Al parecer, a Amelie Nothomb o la amas o la odias y yo definitivamente la amo.
Es impactante como en tan pocas páginas se puede alcanzar ese nivel de profundidad.
