Why is this book called The Encounter? We just don't know.

Tobias is a sad bird who does sad bird things like live in a drawer in his friend's attic and nearly commit suicide at the mall. Man, these books are impressively dark for a kids' series! It's good. It's so good. Bring on the '90s-era Scholastic book fair pain!

Tobias was never my favorite character as a kid; I found his personality a bit boring, and his mopey introspection got tiring after a while. However, adult me recognizes that this is where the series truly begins to hit its emotional stride, dealing with hard-hitting issues that in retrospect are truly shocking to see in a tween novel. I'm so glad my parents let me read these books when I was young.

This was a great installment! Only reason for the missing .5 is because, for me, this took some emotional fortitude to get through due to a character I’m fond of just ~going through it~. Highly recommend!

This is the best one yet, I can't believe what my poor baby Tobias had to go through here

ka applegate voice how subtle do I have to make the subtext that the POV character is actually trying to kill himself for it to be publishable in a middle grade fiction book
