slow-paced
About 10 pages in it was just blatant pro-military Islamophobia rooted in white supremacy (I.e. militarization is okay when it’s against brown people & poc, but not when it affects white people). It was so obvious - to me anyways - that those who wrote the port Huron statement and participated in SDS were upper-middle class white kids who wanted to piss off their parents. They don’t understand the struggle and they never will. A lot of the introduction is essentially bragging about how students a part of SDS who were attacked by politicians later became politicians - Hayden has obviously never read Audre Lorde or experienced systemic oppression. It was so frustrating to read - constantly diluting black-led movements, excluding women’s roles in grassroots, and at times just being simply classist and ostentatious. There are multiple paragraphs detailing how they “realized that people were being oppressed and were poor” - wow, let’s give the rich white kids gold stars for saying the same shit that marginalized peoples have been saying since the inception of this fucking country. Fuck this thinly veiled white supremacist more right-leaning bullshit. Oh and the cherry on top was the chapter on how they were “tired” of the socialist & communist organizations, followed by a chapter dickriding capitalism. Capitalism, no matter what it is paired with, will never liberate anyone or anything. Absolutely atrocious.

Still relevant to contemporary society, particularly the first half that focuses on political apathy, complacency and the importance of hope to foster change.
