Oh how I have talked about this book to anyone who would listen. A dystopian oral history of if we had a global insurrection that grew into a communized world in the 2050s-2070s.

Each interview is carefully chosen to show you a different part of what happened in “history”. You learn everything from the awful violence and death that happened (had to happen?) to get to the almost idealized world they are living in in “present day,” to the state of technology and current work needed to protect and preserve the environment. You learn about how society views gender and family constructs and how (potentially) life does not have to revolve around money and wealth disparity.

I’d say this felt hopeful, in that maybe just maybe there’s a way we could have a future that’s completely different than what we experience today, and how technology can be used for good. However, there would have to be a lot of violence and destruction (and time!) to get there.

Highly recommend.

As I’ve thought more and more about this—and as I’ve gone back to do a closer reading of particular parts—I’ve concluded that this is a bigger accomplishment as a work of fiction than I initially had thought. However, I’m frustrated by the seeming refusal to incorporate any plot or conflict beyond overwrought explanations on the part of the “interviewees” and inconsequential offenses committed by the “interviewers.”

Interesting ideas and tantalizing glimpses of what COULD have been a great, straightforward account of how we got to a dramatically-reshaped 2070 New York City.

Overall: 3.25; read only if particularly enamored with the premise as stated on the cover.

2.5. would have been higher but for one chapter that absolutely infuriated me.
