Paranormal State: My Journey Into the Unknown by Stefan Petrucha, Ryan Buell

This book was ok, it made you understand Ryan better and their reasons for what they do but if you have seen the show, most of the stories will be retold. They do however include bits and pieces of behind the scenes type things that they don't have time to show on tv that was interesting. I enjoyed his perspective on the paranormal and how even though he has seen crazy stuff, he still examines everything and ultimately, most things can be explained. Still a huge fan of PRS!!!

I am really grateful for this book. It really opened my eyes to the world of the paranormal. I didn't once doubt Buell's stories, because he came off as such a well-meaning, concerned, intelligent guy. He always kept the client's interests in mind, as well as the spirit's, while also investigating the nature of hauntings. I think this is proof that some investigators are genuinely interested in the meanings and logic behind the paranormal, instead of just being "ghost hunters" and exploiting the spirits for adrenaline or publicity. I learned a lot while reading this book, the most important being that you shouldn't be afraid. The spirits usually aren't there to harm, just to communicate, to find a sense of peace.

I know not everyone believes in this, but I find this a good argument for the fact. The point of the book wasn't to scare the reader, as some were probably expecting, but to educate. And I really appreciate that.

I went into this book a little hesitant because I'm not a terribly huge fan of the show, but I was pleasantly surprised. Ryan explained away most of the misconceptions created by the show and did a decent job explaining how and why they investigate.

Paranormal State is honestly not my go-to ghost hunting show, because it's probably the one that I see as the least genuine. This is partially because of the fact that it's shoved into a half-hour timeslot and it's really hard to get anything credible in a 30 minute timeframe, and also because some people who aren't necessarily members of PRS are a little prone to dramatics. (Looking at you, Chip.) That's not to say I don't enjoy PS, just that it's not my favorite of the crowd.

So with that, I was a little hesitant to read this book, because I just didn't want more of the same hyped up overdramatic screaming that we get in the episodes. But it was on sale for kindle this month and I figured I didn't have a whole lot to lose. I'm really glad I picked it up, because I unexpectedly found myself enjoying it. This book covers the first season of the show, so if you haven't seen the show, it's probably not going to make much sense to you.

I was glad to see the level of skepticism and the apparent integrity that we don't necessarily see on the tv show. There was a lot about how the production crew changes the way an investigation goes, and since I've watched every ghost hunting/paranormal tv show out there, I have always wondered this. I was glad to see its inclusion. I do still think that Chip is a little too melodramatic, but I now see how he had to prove himself and I might actually like him a tiny bit more, too. I definitely feel like I have a higher level of respect for this team and for Ryan Buell after reading this book.

I was so excited when this show came out. I ordered this book in hopes of learning more about Ryan, and it definitely served that purpose. This book goes into detail about how he came into the paranormal investigation family and why he continues to do it. This was a pretty interesting read, though it wasn't my favorite book of the year.

Book got a little long at the end, I couldn't wait for it to be over. Other than that it gives great reviews as to what happened in filming season one of Paranormal State!

Interesting to (finally) find out what sparked Ryan's interest in the paranormal and to get more background on what wasn't on television, though I would have preferred to get to know more about the team's work outside of the tv show.
