At the beginning, I wasn’t grabbed by this, but once the kids cross over into the other world, it really took off like a shot.

I had so much fun with this, and found it surprisingly tense. Much more fantastical in setting than my first Goosebumps adventure (Welcome to Dead House), and a bit more whimsical than outright creepy. But the majority of the book is an extended chase sequence and it doesn’t really let up once it gets going and it has a WHOPPER of an ending. Legit had to stare at the page for a second once I read the final words.

This was a blast! Going to probably read A Night in Terror Tower next!

It’s a Goosebumps book written largely for children- it has a predictable ending, silly dialogue, and needs much suspension of disbelief but it is fun, nostalgic, and fairly imaginative at its core. I remember this being my favorite, probably 20-22 years ago now, and couldn’t resist bringing it home when I saw it in a thrift store, then reading it in about 30 minutes.  I will always be a Goosebumps kid at heart.

This one was cute! "Let's play a game, but we're not telling you the rules even though you continue to tell us that you've never played before and that you don't want to play now." Sounds like my brothers...

So in my never ending quest to read all the books from the original goosebumps series, i picked up another one. this one i never got around to reading as a kid. And honestly, that's a good thing.

Having been the 4th of these i've read recently, this is by far the worst.

General idea. Girl and twin brothers get lost in forest and are forced to play tag with blue furry creatures for their lives.

This book was irritating because the game made no sense. Imagine you're playing a game with a kid that he made up himself, and not only do you not understand the rules, but once you finally understand how to play and you win, he changes the rules and goes "nuh uh, you didn't win because of this rule i totally didn't just make up". now imagine that, but for an entire book.

Yes there's the looming threat that these creatures will kill the MC, but it's not scary as you don't understand the rules to the game. At one point they introduce points, but the points don't seem to matter as the game basically just equivocates to tag.

The entire story is basically just the main girl complaining that she doesn't know the rules and can't figure out what to do. It's not interesting or scary, it's just annoying.

All in all, def the worst of the 4 i've read which is sad because i wanted to like this one. Also, the title's a bit weird. "The beast from the East" Has nothing to do with the creatures being from the East. it's the name of the game they play and you have to tag someone while facing East. Yes, it's as stupid as it sounds.

Read the whole thing in 2 days over the course of like.. 90 minutes, and thank god for that.
