In 'Green Lanterns, Volume 2: The Phantom Lantern' by Sam Humphries with art by Robson Rocha, the Earth is now being protected by two new Green Lanterns, but will that be enough to save it?

Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz are the newest Green Lanterns, but Jessica can't quite control her power and Simon doesn't think he has enough power. They are also helping to hide Rami, one of the last Guardians. Rami has a secret, a phantom ring. With the phantom ring, anyone can wear it, and it covers all the color spectrums, but at a pretty great cost. This brings bad guy Volthoom out of the universe to hunt him down. It also brings a guy named Frank Laminski who was passed over to be a Green Lantern and has delusions of being a superhero.

It's a really solid story arc. Frank is played out as pitiable and a bit crazy. The original Guardian brings some good original history of how the rings were created. Simon and Jessica kind of come in to their own, which is good because they are going to need it. This is a pretty good team up. The art is fantastic. I really enjoyed this one.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Simon and Jessica are more likeable in this volume, but don't make choices to affect the actual story. Frank Laminski is a funny villain, but he's clearly not the main contenter. The art is great and exactly what you want from a Green Lantern book.
Ultimately, this is an inbetween story to setup better things to come. There's enough to keep me from being bored during an issue, but is so handholdy in its writing that I get annoyed.

There’s a new ring in town.. well not new but new to the story. You guessed it the phantom ring. Queue clapping and cheering music.

So basically the phantom ring was created years ago by a guardian named rami and the premise of the ring is that instead of choosing the person who wears the ring anyone can pick this ring up and wear it and it’ll feed off your emotions like a battery.

I really enjoyed how Jessica and Simon and getting along a lot better you can tell in their dialogue and Simon isn’t as cocky as before I felt like. I really enjoyed the phantom lantern story. There were some cool parts like when volthoom (the first green lantern) fought the guardian rami or the pages when Jessica and Simon wore the phantom ring and it showed all the emotions (coloured by some person named ‘blond’). I also liked the family matters arc but not as much as the phantom lantern arc.

My problem with this was that some scenes of dialogue not including Jessica or Simon bored me sometimes and they incorporate simon’s family a lot when they don’t give any attention to Jessica’s family.

Overall great book

This one is even better than the last one, the Phantom Lantern's origin story is just so good, and made me feel bad for the bad guy, and even the "filler" issues are great because it has so many character moments, both Simon and Jessica, I love how Simon's religious background and Jessica's anxiety is portrayed and explored in this series

This was a terrific arc, I really loved the threat posed by the phantom ring but also the lure and how it fed into Jessica and Simon's insecurities about being green lanterns. The artwork was also beautiful, with the use of the emotional spectrum providing some gorgeous panels. I eagerly await the next volume.

I'm really growing to like the duo of Baz and Jessica - especially how Jessica's anxiety is portrayed and how she's working to overcome it. (e-galley from Netgalley)
