Honestly, starting off this book it was my least favorite of Fforde's work. I know he's into absurd situations/humor from both Thursday Next and Nursery Crime, but here just found just choices rather random and somewhat pointless. The whole thing about spoons and synthetic colors just left confuse and uncaring. However, after the first hundred pages the book began to grow on me until I invested (and angry at how the Edward was manipulated by the purples) by the end. Multiple points I laughed at Fforde's writing and he manages to tackle this 1984-esque absurd dystopia and the waste of human potential in a uniquely light-hearted, but seriously emotionally caring way that I can't really describe.  I went from thinking I really didn't need to read this to really wanting see what happens next to Edward and Jane  when the sequel arrives.
