The story about the professor whose memory stopped in 1975 and can't go beyond last 80 minutes and the relationships with his housekeeper , her son and his sister-in-law is a touching tale about love, friendship and coping with lack of your own past. It is written in wonderful language that skilfully shows the beuty of mathematics.

A lovely story about a friendship that blossoms due to unlikely circumstances.

Personally I am not fond of math, so it was fascinating seeing how, despite his memory, the Professor was able to constantly connect with his housekeeper and Root through his love and memory of mathematics. And it was touching to see the housekeeper slowly come to understand the professor and all his quirks, and despite not fully understanding math herself, taking the time to learn and appreciate formulas and prime numbers just because it was something the professor himself loved. It was also touching to see how these three characters become a sort of family together, and the bond that the professor and Root develops. I think the relationship between the professor and Root is one of my favorite things from the book because it’s so sweet and what I imagine a loving grandpa-grandson relationship to be like.

oh man as a math nerd and a slice of life bitch this was such a joy to read!! I absolutely adored spending time talking about the beauty of prime numbers with a nameless housewife, her 'root-shaped' haired son, and an iconic math professor.

I 100% want to reread this book at some other time though, because I read most of it at school (I tried to avoid reading it in math classes as a sign of respect to the Professor) and sometimes my mind would drift off and I'd lose focus :c

Ogawa Yoko san's writing was honestly super accessible (there was not One furigana throughout the entire book and I managed to get through it fine?????) without sounding too simple - it was like a warm comforting blanket that just poured love into me.

spoiler (kinda?)

this is probably due to my attention span as aforementioned, but sometimes I felt like Hakase's memory went way over 80 minutes? idk I really need to reread some bits. and ngl, I was quite confused at the baseball scenes... I had 0 idea what they were talking about

definitely one of those books that I'll think about randomly at some point daily <3
