I knew nothing about the book before reading and wish I could remember who recommended it to me. I enjoyed the variety of characters and the hyper-realism (except one character, who felt a little flat).
The themes revolve around contemporary black women and their intergenerational grief, oppression, loneliness, solidarity, and "other"-ing.
The book is heavy and painful without graphic violence. A short read. I plan to look up more from this author.

What a fantastic story collection. Danielle Evans is so bracingly smart and attentive to all the things: detail, character, plot. It's all there and it is so great. A lot of standouts, including an excellent novella.

No hate to anyone it just wasn't the book for me. However I did enjoy the story of the runaway bride.

This was my first foray into short stories/novellas and I liked it. It was a bit jarring to start new stories, but I liked it. I especially liked the last story in the book because I live in Wisconsin and felt a bit more connected to the story.
