2.5 Would've worked better as a longer article. Not quite enough substance for a full length book.

it was alright, i wish there was more literary analysis honestly.
i’m not super into true crime so the book was a little difficult to get through but i did appreciate the back and forth chapters.
it was a little bland i’ll be honest, i think Jamie Loftus’ Lolita podcast is much better at addressing Lolita, Nobokolv and victims like Sally. I read this book a year or so after listening to the podcast and it’s helpful context but a little bit too much of “this happened then this then this” etc.
definitely a must read for Lolita scholars but if you aren’t one, or like the pop culture analysis side more, listen to Jamie’s podcast! :)

I think the book suffers in trying to straddle sally coverage and nobokov bio. add in all the extra pieces of crime at the time and the legal proceedings and it just gets messy. surely bc the author knew a book only about sally’s short life would have made for a better podcast episode. good premise, not great execution

I appreciate the attention to the "real" Lolita that the author has brought forward. I think many people, including myself, figured that it was a story created by Vladimir Nabokov, which could have been about a many number of girls, but not one in particular. By the end of the book, I think I was left with more questions than answers, but it will forever be a mystery.
