I needed something to wash the bad taste that The Last Jedi left in my mouth and this helped. It goes back to a better time in the cinematic universe (though it does ignore the original EU). If you are curious as to what may have happened between A New Hope and Empire Strikes back, as it relates to Disney's current canon, this is a great way to get it. The panels are drawn like cinema, and there is a focus on plot over characters. This is a fun and fast way to catch yourself up if it is your first go at the Star Wars universe or if you just need a kick in the nostalgia factor.

Disclaimer: I only picked this up because I really, really love just about everything Jason Aaron has ever written. In writing Star Wars, he did not disappoint, although he captures the world of Star Wars so well that his own voice gets a tiny bit lost. Still, a welcome return to the Star Wars universe.

That was a lot of fun and just as good as watching a movie. It's an indeterminate time since the original Star Wars and the Empire is desperate to figure out who blew up the Death Star. Han seems to want to leave and Leia seems happy to let but, you know, resources are tight and the Rebellion needs to keep its parts for a new base instead of giving Han some parts to get out.

So really, it's business as usual and it's great. The three of them are their awesome selves and they are out getting things done. What I really do like is how uncertain Luke is. You don't get to see how Luke changes from film one to film two and this looks like to be giving us a look into how he gets more comfortable with this new set of skills that he has no real idea how to use.

I also love Vader and Boba Fett in this. Also the appearance of a certain original character and I can't wait to see what comes next with them.

Overall, if you like the movies you'll like this.

I'll keep this quick: Star Wars fans should believe the hype surrounding this Marvel series launched in the capable hands of Jason Aaron and John Cassaday. Cassaday's art is bombastic, detailed yet cartoony, and is a perfect fit for Aaron's script. Aaron shows his firm handle on all of the original cast's voice, while simultaneously creating a story that fits plausibly between Episodes IV and V, yet remains filled with tension and excitement. Not only did I love this first collection, but I am dying to get my hands on the next volume. The Force is strong with this one.

Cassaday was born to illustrate faces, and these are some of the most well-known faces to fanboys of the last 40 years. You can't mess up Leia's face and expect to get away with it. The Star Wars universe has never been grittier and prettier than it is here - Cassaday's Artoo and lightsabers and ships and Mandalorian battle togs; there are definitely splash pages designed to be stared at.

The writing left me kind of two minds, though. This is canon, we are led to understand, and we have some secondary interactions that feel like repetitions, or moments that ring a little forced as we try to wring more juice from a Han & Leia conversation, for instance, or the extended time spent on Tattooine that feels so much like the first time. Certainly a far cry from the Marvel Star Wars books of my youth (which were sinfully uneven) but it remains to be seen if the payoff on a long story arc will be there.

In the meantime, there's Vader bringing down an AT-AT, Chewie taking a potshot at him, and Boba Fett going full Rorschach in the original "wretched hive of scum and villainy."
