Heartbreaking and beautiful. It took me a long time (probably 3/4 of the way through the book) before the structure stopped jarring me but overall this is a story wonderfully woven together and so achingly told.

Doerr is a poet. He painted this story so beautifully. I love the short chapter layout and how the stories converged so seamlessly. According to Doerr, this novel was a decade in the works. I must say it was well worth the wait.

Wow . . . I’m speechless. What a powerful book. I appreciated that it was such a unique WWII story. The main characters are compelling, and I found their stories gripping. It ends as it should, even if not how I hoped. It was one book that deserves all of the hype.

Not for me. A friend of mine lent it to me so I had to finish it. I like WWII stories but this one was so boring and repetitive. I didn’t have a strong sense of the devastation that occurred during this time. I was not a fan of the short chapters or the back and forth storylines with ever changing timelines. So happy to mark it done.
