This book is much more interesting if you approach it as a series of performance pieces rather than as a book to read. I wouldn't encourage anyone to read it, but I would encourage teachers to help their students perform the pieces in this book. This is more of a resource for teachers than it is a book for kids.

And while I kind of enjoyed reading this book, there is NO WAY it should have received the Newbery over Wednesday Wars or Feathers (Newbery Honor Books that year). This is the kind of book that appeals way more to the adults who work with middle grades students than it does to actual middle grades students.

The Newbery committee chose well this year (however, my favorite is still Wednesday Wars). I listened to this on CD and the performance was very well done.

I am now convinced I will never be on any literature award committee, as I cannot fathom why this won anything...i was bored to pieces and would love to find a kid that was entertained by this book.

Very quick audiobook. Checking off a book that happened in the past for newbery bingo. It is a collection of poems about kids in the Middle Ages. The Vocab was tough for Reid and we pretty much had to stop after each one to talk about it. He got most of it, but some concepts (like saint and religious persecution) were foreign to him. Overall it was enjoyable but probably will not stick with me.

I found it interesting how the author describes life in the medieval times from an evolutionary perspective, where everyone does what they do so they can survive. The book was fun to read, but also rather heavy. The author didn't shy away from the dark side of medieval times. I did feel it was rather overpowering, since there really weren't any bright spots.
