Da una parte ho molto apprezzato il fatto che l'autrice si sia fatta aiutare per la parte tecnica (terapie, psicologi, PTSD, pazienti che hanno subito gravi abusi, 'blocchi della memoria' ecc) da persone competenti, citate ad inizio libro, che hanno reso il romanzo verosimile e mai patetico ma anzi: doloroso, dolce e tenero, senza buttarci in mezzo guarigioni (troppo) miracolose e persone traumatizzate che al primo bacino del tipo che li attizza tornano ad essere felici e sorridenti dimentiche del loro passato (Sì, ho visto anche scene del genere. Senza ritegno proprio!)..
Ho trovato il romanzo molto equilibrato, con gli eventi che evolvono pian piano e viene dato il tempo al tempo (sì, a volte un po' di cose esagerate le ho trovate, ma nulla che pregiudichi la lettura, ecco!).
D'altra parte però secondo me l'autrice ha commesso un gravissimo errore nella scelta del titolo. O meglio diciamo l'autrice o chi per lei: Billy's bones è un titolo che non lascia proprio nulla all'immaginazione e toglie tutto il gusto di arrivare alla fine perché non c'è nulla di inaspettato. Tante volte mi capita di immaginare la fine delle storie (e spesso mi auto-spoilero il tutto, ma dettagli :D), di fare ipotesi, vederle smontate pagina dopo pagina o di ricredermi nel corso della lettura.. Qui invece l'idea iniziale si è rivelata quella giusta ed è un peccato perché non credo che il romanzo sia banale e superficiale, ha potenziale!

This book took me through every emotion there is. It wrecked me a bit but I could not put it down. I read it in one sitting. It is now after 3am, and I'm to emotionally wound up to even attempt sleep.

I'm finding it difficult to quantify my enjoyment of a book whose subject matter repulsed and sickened me to the core. As it is, it was a brilliantly told story. A profoundly sobering experience and one that I won't soon forget.

I both loved and hated this book.
The mystery, while it was there, was intriguing. And I loved the little twists and how things never seemed to quite go as planned for the characters. The writing flowed nicely and I had a hard time putting it down to go to bed each night.
But...I really didn't feel any chemistry toward the characters. And the fact that they both wandered around naked so much was more strange than hot. I am also not a fan of characters that need to be comforted on a constant basis. Yes, Kevin had a horrible time of...just about everything, but I got tired of it all.
It took me halfway through the book before I realized I had no idea about the title. And that clued me in about what was going to be revealed about Kevin's past. I wish the title was different, because that twist would have had a much bigger impact.
All in all a decent read, and I might check out another book by this author in the future.

Not was I was expecting going into the book, but absolutely enjoyed it. The dynamics of the characters relationship and their personalities are so real and tangible.
More...
