I enjoyed this dual narrative about two backpacking couples who coincidentally (not) end up going to a few of the same exotic locales. As the narratives peeled back, I was on the edge of my seat, wondering, worrying how it would unfold.

Told in spare language with layered revelations, the thrill holds on to the very last page.

A well-crafted and propulsive thriller that will keep you guessing to the end about who is the hunter and who is the hunted.

It was good, but not quite as thrilling as I expected. It was a very slow burn.

It’s no secret I don’t read a lot of thrillers in print as I often struggle with them in that format, but I found myself flying through this one. It’s a fast and creepy read, solidifying that I will continue to fear hostels and off the grid isolation lol

The prologue is very exciting, then the book goes back a few weeks and takes us on a slow burn journey back to where the prologue leaves off. The end is not a shocking twist exactly, but it is a solid reveal - the ending both is and isn’t expected (it was for me anyways lol)

I enjoyed the first person narration, the use of dual POVs, and the layered revelations  - particularly Leo’s chapters as I tried to figure out if he’s really that insane or if it’s misdirection lol.
While none of the characters are particularly likeable, their personalities are strong and well developed, as are their dark secrets and histories

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I love this author’s previous two books (and HIGHLY recommend them!), but this one just didn’t do it for me. The setting (tiny island in Africa) was hard to visualize and the characters only hinted at being developed…it was just ok.

Usually I can predict twists in books but this one took me completely by surprise for some reason!

It’s not the lions and leopards doing the stalking in THE HUNTED!

Stevie Erickson is at sixes and sevens! The sudden loss of her grandmother, memories of the tragic death of a good friend in a car accident, lousy sleeping plagued with recurring nightmares, doubts about a strained relationship with her boyfriend. It’s no wonder she thinks that a vacation completely away from all of that might be just the ticket that the doctor ordered. So it’s off to Africa on a backpacking trip only to discover that “darkest Africa” doesn’t mean what she used to think it meant.

The literary style of first person narration is brilliant and works perfectly for this novel. The reader is put right into the mind and the mind-set of each of the narrators in alternating chapters. There is no doubt that you will have the creepy feeling of doubt and worry that something and somebody is not quite right from the opening sentence until the climax and, of course, the inevitable twisted ending. THE HUNTED is just a novel, of course, but readers will come away with a greater appreciation of the profound effect that being stalked in real life would have on someone’s state of mind.

Definitely recommended. Three cheers for Canadian authors.
