God I didn’t realise how emotional this book would be, some bits really got me. It told a very interesting story definitely, though absolutely had some heartbreaking and sometimes quite dark moments for a kids book. I always have a vivid memory of this book as a child but I only ever remembered the opening part, didn’t realise how wild the story got until I read it properly now. It also brought up so many memories and little cute moments I remember of my dog that made me so happy.

As a child, my mother fostered rescue dogs. The majority of them were lurchers. Our own dogs have always been lurchers. They're my favourite breed, the calmest, sweetest and most loving friends you could ask for. It's no wonder this was a favourite book of mine when I was younger.

There is so much emotion within the book that it was almost overwhelming to read again. From being abandoned in a canal to being forced to be a race dog, to being attacked by other dogs, Best Mate / Bright Eyes / Paddywack has a real journey. All you want for the whole book is for him to be happy.

And dear god.. Patrick not recognising him at the end.. and Paddywack just being happy that he even got to see Patrick again - was bawling.

A very emotional book I wasn't sure if I would finish it or not but I'm glad I did because it ended well.

I love this book! Any dog rescue story would probably have had me blubbing, so the story of Best Mate the greyhound really did it for me - i rescue greyhounds myself!
Brilliant descriptive writing and loveable characters (even the humans!) made this book ever so readable - I couldn't put it down.
