This book is charming. A young girl, with an even younger brother who has taken over her job of pushing elevator buttons, finds a button for herself. The illustrations open up a world of imagination for readers, and the interaction between the siblings is perfect.

WOW, what a magical story! I really loved it, though I wish that the parents would have understood what it meant for the girl to push the button. They could have expected what happened next. I would have done the same. I love that the girl finds a magical elevator button and has tons of adventures with jungles and more. I am not sure how I felt about the ending, on the one hand YAY, on the other hand.... eh. A bit conflicted.
The art was just outstanding and so gorgeous.
All in all, read this one.

This is pretty much a graphic novel for young readers. The pictures are cinematic and tell the story almost on their own, although the minimal text helps add a bit more humor and meaning. The basic premise is that a young girl named Iris finds herself competing for attention and privileges from her parents with her "annoying" baby brother. When she discovers a magic elevator button, she has to decide whether to keep the magic all to herself or share it with her sibling. An uplifting read perfect for children finding the balance between rivalry and camaraderie.

I, too, have a little brother.
And as an auntie and godma I've seen many, many battles of "I want to/My turn/He pushed the button!" But what if the button wasn't just for the elevator? What could you do with a magic button?
Dan Santat's art is amazing. The detail he puts into his work boggles the mind
(PS I recently rewatched Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It holds up.)

What a fun, creative story. However, Minh Le is such a good illustrator, I don't understand why he didn't illustrate it. (The illustrations by Dan Santat were still great - super colorful and detailed - I just missed Minh Le's art.)
When you're a kid, pushing the button is extremely important. So I understood why the oldest girl became upset when her little brother took her job. The little bit of fantasy that joins the story made it special.

Was it a graphic novel for early readers? Was it a picture book?
It was wonderfully illustrated, but it was bit hard to navigate with two kids who are unable to read. They just really didn't get HOW to read this one...
