The things I have to endure for Dan Stevens' narration...

I borrowed this eBook from the library after hearing a sample of Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley from Downton Abby) narrate the audio book. I was shocked to find that it was a little on the saucy side of romance. A little too much for my taste :0/ I did like the main character Piet, so I finished the book to find out his fate.

I wasn't a fan of how this was written. It all felt very formulaic and matter of fact. I also didn't care for the characters, they seemed more of caricatures than fully-formed characters. I didn't find the shifting POV to add much either. I really didn't need to know so much about characters that really weren't important to the overall story.

I did enjoy the plot, though. I thought it was interesting and engaging.

I really enjoyed this book. What a fun read! Piet Barol is an interesting character and I can't wait for the next book which I assume will take place in Cape Town. Looking forward to meeting this author next week at BOTNS Booktopia 2012.

The book is easy to read and it's as diverting as a daydream, but it fails to live up to the promise of it's title. Yes, there are a couple of orgasms and it is set in a sumptuous mansion and ocean liner; but the main character is not so much a pleasure seeker as a young man from a disadvantaged background on the make. He does pretty well for himself, but there are plenty of others who take advantage of him along the way. The book even fails to end properly, promising that it will be continued. Mason and his character will have to go on without me.

I picked up this book as it is set in Amsterdam and there is a hotelier. And I always like a bit of historical fiction. It was a good read but somehow I am not convinced. I think the choice to have each chapter told with a focus on a different character, gives a good all-round understanding of the plot but does not give a deep understanding of the main character's motivation... while it was certainly an interesting story, I felt it was lacking too much to be recommended

I really liked the middle of this book, as well as part of the ending. The beginning was a little slow, and in the end I thought the main character was acting a little too out of character. I will pick up the sequel, as it says "to be continued" on the last page. It was a "racey" book, so if that would bother you, I wouldn't read it. Otherwise, it was a nice period piece, with some interesting characters.
