Second time I’ve tried to read this book. Not sure what it is, but I feel like even though it’s set in the 1970s, the writing makes it feel like it should be war time/1940s….?
I just can’t seem to get on with it

what if the part of TSH where richard almost dies from cold was the entire book, English, and much more about female friendship and your family... these are all good things btw

Complicated relationships among young women. Insightful, painful observations. Excellent writing. Ambiguous ending. This should be a movie.

Solid book. I actually liked the pacing being a bit slow. I was in no hurry to get to the 'action' or whatever. The charm of this book in particular was just in the concise and interesting way it was written, in the occasional reflection. Mantel captures very vividly what it was to be a girl in school post-war. The book doesn't have a lot of staying power or anything revolutionary to say. I suppose the ending may stick with me as well as a general mood. This was just a general good read.

Had to read this for a Women's Literature class. Even though we discussed it at length over several class periods, I still don't understand what this book is about. It's really not my type of book.
