This series was gifted to me for my birthday. I loved the film and I enjoyed the first book, the second book I was really disappointed with so I was hoping this was better and it was but it was missing something.

This book still follows Ethan Wate. He used to think of Gatlin as a place where nothing happens, and nothing changes. Then Lena Duchannes shows up and revealed the secret world of curses and Supernaturals with terrifying abilities. Lena showed him a Gatlin where impossible, magical and life-altering events happens. Now that Ethan’s eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there is no going back. On her seventeenth birthday Lena made a choice that changed everything. The girl Ethan loves has broken the world with the supernatural powers she is struggling to control. Now, they are having to fix the chaos Lena has caused, one of them will have to make a terrible sacrifice. Sometimes there isn’t just one answer. Sometimes there’s no going back.

I still love Ethan, he is still a strong character. I love his development and that he continues to grow so much. I feel like all of these characters have an actual personality and aren’t used to move the storyline along that happens in some books I read. I loved the return of Liv and I'm glad we got to see her growing with Lena - I hate books where two girls fight over a boy for no reason, like Ethan made his feelings clear to Liv about Lena and told Lena not to worry yet they were both being bitches to each other. So I'm glad they got to a mutual understanding. The cliffhanger in these books is getting meaner and meaner and I am not liking them, I understand why cliffhangers are a thing because instantly, even if this book wasn’t my favourite, I want to know what’s happened to the characters and how Gatlin is considering how it ended.

The storyline was strong but it felt a bit repetitive and this book could have been cut by about 150 pages, but I feel like that’s been a bit of a thing during this series so far. After the first book it’s been a lot of repeated information that wasn’t needed. 85% of this storyline was something bad is about to happen and we know nothing but it’s going to happen. It just dragged slightly and I was waiting for this big reveal.

I am hoping that this final book is going to be the kicker and going to emotionally destroy me and put me back together again. I cannot wait to get back to Gatlin and hope that all of our favourite characters make it through to the end.

I enjoyed this book more than the first two. I love the southern gothic vibes. I think that the overall concept of this book is very intriguing.
