What. Wow.
If you’re doing some kind of reading bingo for the year & need to fulfill a ‘read a book unlike anything else you’ve read’, this one will probably satisfy that goal.
‘Freshwater’ is the story of a person struggling to reconcile the fractured selves within her, feeling appropriated and mutinied by a collective of imperious and protective spirits which are awakened, by turns, inside of her through a history of successive traumas.
I read a lot of books that could be described with any one of these terms that also describe this book: dark, strange, mystical, uncanny, iconoclastic, deeply introspective...
...and still this book cannot be classed with any other book I’ve read.

I had started reading this book in the throws of an intense depression that included self harm, and decided it was not going to be good if I kept reading. Returning to it in a stable headspace, after much emotional growth, was powerful. I can see myself in the novel just as much as it depicts an experience that is distinct from my own. Beautiful.

4.5 stars but I’m rounding up my second time through because I love this author and find them so fascinating. This book hits different after reading Dear Senthuran.

It took me a while to get used to the narration style but once I did, wow what a beautiful book about mental health, spirituality, and identity
