A deep dive into the crossovers of memoir and maps, the relationship between a life and the places of a person and all their people, ancestors and lovers. More an academic read than an easily accessible one, it's a deeply researched, carefully crafted and thoughtfully written collection of essays on identity, place, maps, and much more.

I think this memoir is better suited for older people who perhaps lived through the same time periods as Borich described. I found myself lost at certain insets, particularly the ones that went back and time and detailed Borich's family. I know it would be hard to write a memoir without mentioning family, but those sections were the ones I dreaded reading the most, I simply wasn't interested in them. I really enjoyed reading about Borich's personal experiences, especially the one's relating to her sexuality. The comparison of her life and the world in general to maps was also absorbing, the images and diction relating to this theme provided a unique perspective to her life. Although some parts of this book didn't work for me, I really appreciated Borich's distinctive, original voice and the stories she mapped out in this book.
