I love Bill Cunningham, and reading about his start in fashion was so awe-inspiring. He was such a creative, thoughtful, talented man. I loved every moment of this memoir—I didn’t want it to end; I could’ve read 400 more pages. I loved how he spoke about fashion (his hats and other designers' clothes); it was as if the designs were jumping off the pages. He lived such a fascinating life and had such a beautiful outlook on things, even when times were tough, or he had reason to be sad and give up. What an inspiring human being.

This man writes with such a breath taking authenticity that I felt I could hear the words in my head in his voice. A vivid history in fashion. I f******* love this book and will be treating it like an heirloom.

This was a fun read, especially the chapters about his summer hat shop in Southampton and the couple of years he spent writing columns for Women’s Wear. I really wish there had been chapters about his years taking photos and his NYT column.

While an overall interesting read, Cunningham certainly is very full of himself. If you enjoy memoirs where the authors reflect candidly on their own experiences and highlight their mistakes, this is not the book for you. Cunningham details many of the things he was doing and the world going on around him, but never do you step into his mind and understand what he was truly thinking or feeling. This is less of a memoir and more of a book of short stories about the fashion industry in the 1940s-60s.

The author certainly seems pretty full of himself. Well, why not - it's his memoir, let him tell it how he saw it.
