This book is very atmospheric. A little depressing, a little uplifting. Definitely a metaphor in there, but very well written in its honesty

This is the first book I have ever read set in China and the first book I have read written by someone born and raised in China. I am doing my best to actively read books about different cultures by those from those cultures.
I really enjoyed this debut novel. Beautifully and tenderly written, it gave me an insight into a world I am utterly ignorant of. This novel explores the experiences of a young woman freshly widowed; how the world reacts to her circumstances and how she copes with her new situation. Slightly surreal, this has a relaxed, often dreamlike narrative that spell-binds the reader and draws them into a unique time and space. Did I close this book and think 'agh, I understand every aspect of this' - no. But I did close the book and feel content, with a smile on my lips.
Very enjoyable.
