While I really enjoyed the quirky writing the story itself was a little lackluster and I felt very underwhelmed by the ending.

Lost the fortitude to stick with this work, costs exceeded the benefit.

The timelines and jumping back and forwards. And sometimes you wonder how does this relate to what I was just reading. And then he starts explaining it backwards and you eventually reach a point where you understand how its connected.

It's almost like reading a ketamine tripp, hard do grasp and understand everything but I still enjoyed it

This is a study of an existential crisis, the fallibility of memory & the mystery of consciousness in the form of a noir novel. A private detective hired by a woman to find her long-missing husband finds himself increasingly paranoid & unsure of everything. His own identity seems to be disintegrating, “...did he really exist the way he thought he did?” Things become absurd, surreal, but you’ve got to just go with it.

The translation does seem to go astray at times e.g. “Red lanterns dangled saucily in the wind.” A vagina is described as “the beautiful purple membrane.” One particular block of dialogue I had to read three times because it was so bizarre. Is this book totally crazy or really good? I think, ultimately, it’s both.
