It was hard to choose a rating for McCarthy’s first novel, but four stars felt apropos. The plot is winding and hard to grasp (some may argue the plot is flimsy at best), but the characters are compellingly mythic. The three main characters feel as if they are a perverse trinity, existing together in a dark harmony. None of the other McCarthy novels show his Faulknarian influence quite as much as this one, and I did enjoy that (his choice of words, such as implacable and effluvium, really made me feel Faulkner).

Shows the influence of Faulkner very much, but a strong book overall.
