This second book really cemented my love for the series. It had a few moments throughout that blew me away and I never wanted to stop reading it.
Comparing it with the first book though and it felt a little disappointing. It felt like a random assortment of different story lines that weren’t particularly well developed. I’m still really excited to get into the third book and I can’t wait to see how HBO adapts this for screen.

“Everything was going to plan, really. Except that he’d killed someone.”
This book takes you in a completely different direction from the first…definitely for the best. Following the parallel journeys of Lyra and Will, this book takes us through their exploration of different worlds and their unravelling of the mysteries of a powerful, magical knife.
I really loved the addition of Will in this book and I really appreciated that he wasn’t just added in as Lyra’s sidekick. Each of them are just as important as the other and their separate (yet intertwined) quests were truly thrilling.
The ending was action packed and had a few unexpected moments in there too. Can’t wait to continue…

I just don't know... Did the Author had to kill almost anyone we know and love? It is so brilliant up until the end. Maybe one of my favourite books? The end of the worlds is basically here. I just don't know...

Absolutely wonderful. I now have a more detailed description of what's going on in the world of His Dark Materials. However, I still don't have a clue as to what's going to happen in the third book.

Deel twee van de trilogie. Waar de eerste een vrij klassiek avonturen boek was werd het in dit boek allemaal veel groter. Verschillende werelden, goden en engelen. Ik was af en toe een klein beetje de weg kwijt, maar het was nog steeds een heerlijk spannende fantasy. De wereld is rijk, het is goed geschreven. Op naar nummer 3

Meh. What a disappointment after the first one. I don't like all the heavy handed Bible stuff. I mean, did every character just forget that Lord Asriel killed a child??? It seems to me that Pullman is making the argument that because people have done terrible things in the name of the Christian God, therefore, we should go around killing kids because God would tell us that's wrong, so it must be the right thing to do. Even Satanists don't go that far. Also, way less action than the first one and the way he referred to an 11-year-old girl as "Eve" and "the mother" just came across to me as creepy. It kind of feels like a completely different series from the first book. New worlds (which are boring), science instead of magic, no armoured bears, barely any Lyra, no reading the alethiometer... What's going on? (Way too much, imo - daemons, angels, dark matter, Dust, spectors, the Cold War, bad guys searching for Will, Mrs. Coulter, climate change, and on and on and on...) I'll grudgingly start the third one, but if it just continues on this "God is evil" diatribe, I'll DNF it because that's boring and base af. It's like Pullman decided that his hatred of Christianity is more important than fully developed characters. Malone and Dr. Charles, all the new kids - all pointless caricatures. Re-litigating the original battle between God and Satan? Goodness gracious. I mean, I'm not even Christian and I'm eye rolling.
