This book was a good companion to Born Confused. I feel like Dimple has grown, but is still distinctly the girl we read about in the first book. I'm a little unsure about Karsh, but eh. So is Dimple.
Unfortunately, I'm not overly fond of the way sentences are marked (or ends not marked as the case may be) because it has proven difficult for me to read and often requires a few rereads to see what goes where. Which means that reading this book was a bit more tiring than relaxing. But worth it in the end.

Sequel to Born Confused
Dimple and her boyfriend Karsh travel to India for a family wedding. While there, they struggle not just with cultural differences but also with keeping their relationship intact.
While this received a starred review from Kirkus, I respectfully disagree. The writing is lyrical and stream-of-consciousness, which is lovely for a while, but at 500+ pages, it is too much. There are numerous sexual situations and references as well as teen drinking and drug use.

alright so i finished this book a few days ago and I feel bad giving it 2 stars but I mean 2 stars stands for "it was okay" SO. And it's more "it was okay" than "i liked it."

Was I a completely different person when I read Born Confused or was Born Confused just written in a completely different way? Or maybe I liked it less than I thought I did, but time and the subject matter made me think I liked it more than I actually did. I do remember it not being as good as I thought it could've been in some ways.

Anyway about THIS book. Who writes dialogue with dash marks instead of quotations?? This is not a norm in English writing in the U.S. (where this book was written I believe, or at least where the author is from). It was really hard to follow when I first started the book, and even as I could finally get past it, it was like... but why? I don't understand the reason for this stylistic choice. I also just really disliked the whole way the book was written, sorry. Like I can appreciate that it's written in the way it is to give a certain effect and to be like the voice of its main character. But it was dizzying and not in a good way. And like maybe the writing was MEANT to give a sense of how pretentious Dimple and her crowd are, but even if it was... it was annoying. And if it wasn't... ugh. But really, who talks like this in casual conversation really. And not even the dialogue, but just how things are written in general? Like in the first few pages I was able to appreciate the dizzying effect, but when you're book is like 560 pages, it gets annoying and hard to read and too many words.

And I mean, I understand that all books do not have to speak to my experience BUT I think I was absolutely turned off by the world portrayed by this book lol. But that's less a reflection of the book and more one of me, I think. So that's fine. Because reading about this microcosm in Bombay could work for someone else.

There are things I hated about the plot but I won't write them here because of spoilers.

I read the last 100 pages by skimming even though I usually hate skimming. This was because this book was overdue and I could not renew it any more times to try to finish this. It was a CHORE to try to finish this book (I hate to read a book unfinished after I've started). It seemed like what happened in the last 100 pages was okay, but I also skipped over parts that seemed like they could be annoying pretty fast so there's that.

I don't think I've ever disliked something and then also have it be somethign I wANTED to like so bad that I feel so disappointed I have to write a ~scathing review but here you go, first time.
