Matthew Perry was so blatantly open in this memoir that it truly felt like I was sitting beside him as he detailed his struggles with addiction, fear of abandonment, and mental health. It’s a raw, intense story that hurts as much as it heals. His passing last year due to the effects of suspected drug use make the hopeful ending of this story all the more heartbreaking. However, there is a sense that he’s not entirely honest here too. I enjoyed many moments of this book, but it left me wondering how anyone fighting addiction finds lasting peace. So often the physical damage of addiction is pushed to the forefront, but the mental torment is rarely discussed with this level of authenticity. The audiobook was delivered with Perry’s characteristic levity and the tone was often the  redeeming quality of such a dark story.

Where do I even begin.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for awhile. After hearing about his passing I decided that the best way to pay tribute was to finally read it.

This book is an emotional roller-coaster. It is raw, truthful and makes you reflect on areas of your own life at the same time.

The biggest takeaway of this book has to be that no matter what you're going through, you are never alone. Don't be afraid to reach out for help and check up on those around you.

Rest in peace Matthew Perry. I hope God is treating you well after that pact.
