I think he does crazy really well, but I dont think the book was scary at all. There wasn't much suspense, and I didn't know what I wanted out of it. Regardless it was interesting and I did "enjoy" it in the end. But I didnt love it, and didnt feel like it did anything special.

If macabre isn’t your thing, you won’t enjoy this. This story (like most of King’s work) is very character driven. The descriptions are amazing. Really makes you feel dreadful. With the main theme being how one particularly bad decision impacts the lives of so many others. And the guilt. The symbolism with the rats… spot on.

I think if I read the book first, I would be disappointed with the movie.
Spoiler
This is a story about a farmer who has a wife who wants to sell her acreage (passed down to her by her father). They can't agree, and so the father gets their son to murder his wife. The son does it because of his selfishness (don't wanna leave his girlfriend behind).Simply a tragedy. I can't say totally that the farmer got what he deserved because I have come to understand him in a weird way. Does that make me a condoner of murder? Maybe. But he got what was coming to him.
Plot was realistic, characters were well-written, the storytelling was, for lack of a better word, amazing.

It's a short story but is skillfully told and feels like it's a lot bigger book. The lead character is addressing the reader throughout and in this situation it really worked for me.
Generally, the characters in the book are not likeable in the traditional sense, but eventually, I felt someone needed a little luck. I liked the relationship between the father and son, even though it was messed up! and the Mother...I disliked her very much.
I did feel like I was firmly within the era which includes a few characters viewports that were problematic but very believable.
I'll not say too much about the plot but the ending I found satisfying however it could be open to interpretation.
Note: I heard the Netflix adaptation is good

The real victim of this is Hank - he doesn't really want to kill his mother, he's just terrified of upsetting his father and upset himself for being insulted and slapped by his mother whom he loves so dearly. Corruption spreads from his father to him, motioning for him to run away from home and begin a short life of crime, encouraging his pregnant girlfriend to join him. Ultimately getting all three killed.
Are the rats real? Can Wilf really see his dead wife being puppeted by rats? I don't think so, I think his guilt caused him to see apparitions of her to remind him of what he had done.
