My only complaint was that it was over so quickly! Fell in love with Tom and Sarah. This is a highly romantic story. I was a little worried about it being a historical and involving tattoos-- that just didn't seem to add up-- but I couldn't have been more wrong. This might be unconventional, but I guarantee if your read it it'll suck you in.

I liked this book, but it was too short to go into detail about anything.

Sarah goes to a carnival where she sees Tom and then the next day, she sees him in her barn. She lets him stay there in exchange for doing work around her farm. They keep him a secret until something happens and then the town reacts to him staying with Sarah.

The relationship development between Sarah and Tom was very minimal and I wanted to see more.

Sarah had a personality which was kind of automatically developed because the book is told from her POV. Tom, on the other hand, doesn’t really have much of one. Yes, he has some trauma and he’s a quiet person, but I wanted to see more about what he was like as a person.

There were some side characters, but all of them only appeared in short scenes. Grace was Sarah’s friend, and yet she’s not really shown. I think I might have liked the librarian and the sheriff’s wife, but, again, they weren’t shown enough.

This book was fine, but it needed to be longer.

Good story, fun idea and interesting characters all make for a oretty good read... but did it really need the slurs? I understand that it's set in the 40s but in my opinion historocal accuracy isn't an excuse. It's difficult to know if it's due to accurately portraying views of the time or just the author's own insensitivity.

Such a sweet romance.

I had never heard of Bonnie Dee before picking up this book, but I will definitely be checking out more of her books.

Tom was one of the most unique and sweetest heroes I have come across in some time. His character was definitely the main thing I loved about this book.

I had a few issues that kept me from giving this a 5 star rating. Sarah came across as a little flat at times, and the story did seem to drag a bit towards the middle of the book. Also, I realize that Tom was very much a quiet man, but I did miss having him actually telling Sarah how he felt about her.

But otherwise, this was an overall beautiful love story between two lonely people who definitely deserved some happiness. This book left me with a big case of the warm fuzzies. :)

"She loved this man, his simplicity and sweetness, and nothing else mattered."

I was really looking forward to this story. I have an affinity for circus/carnival themed love stories. I had a hard time at first warming up to the hero (took awhile to establish his personality) and heroine (I'm not particularly fond of overconfident, badass women), but I liked their story, and I liked their start.

Some of the descriptions in the book were just flawless! For example:
"In the hushed darkness beneath the canvas, each display was iluminated by a single bulb. The dim light cast odd shadows, adding to the gloomy atmosphere of the stiflinf tent. Heat from earlier in the day was trapped in the airless enclosure. The smell of unwashed bodies and cow manure was rank."

That's a great description!

Here's another I love:
"It was as if he saw and marked her pain, still percolating underneath the veneer of dull ennui. His scalpel gaze hurt as it cut through her scars."

Chills!

My one complaint is more from a personal preference and should in no way dissuade anyone from reading this love story. The story is very low angst, minimal conflict, and kinda anticlimactic (for my own preference). I feel like there was a LOT of suggested potential conflict, and there were a LOT of opportunities for conflict, but the reader was never quite taken there. That was a little disappointing, only because it seemed like the characters got off a little easy, in spite of the reader being told to expect hard times and "storms."

I'm such a sucker for the lost and lonely souls finding each other and boy did this book ever deliver on that! A little disappointed the paranormal aspect just seemed to get forgotten about by the last 30% or so but that's a fairly small complaint.
