When I first saw this book on Goodreads, I immediately wanted to read it but I was thoroughly disappointed to realize it had only been released in the UK and I would have to wait months for its US release. The moment it was available I ordered it and couldn't wait to read it.

First of all, the US hardback edition is gorgeous, so it will definitely be receiving a prominent position in my library. Also, the dust jacket has a reinforced lining, which I love because I don't have to be quite as careful with it.

Admittedly, I was a little slow getting into the book, but after the first few chapters I was hooked. Although Gus and Tess are both flawed characters, they are both extremely likable. Many of the other reviews I read were voiced disappointment in regards to some of their actions, but honestly it was refreshing. They are real people who have faced real hardships and tragedy. Also - a lot of the reviews commented that there were multiple depressing parts of the book, but that's life. Maybe a lot of reviewers have been lucky and everything in their lives has been great, but I enjoy reading realistic stories and this was realistic.

Even though the author took nearly 400 pages for Gus and Tess to have a proper meeting, I wasn't bothered by it. Both of their stories were interesting and compelling. It wasn't like one was more enjoyable than the other. I was invested in both of their storylines, longing for them to finally meet. When they did finally meet, and we were graced with the 30 or so pages of their interactions, I was so happy. Once the book ended, I was dying for more of them together. The characters compliment each other so well and I would loved to have seen more of them together.

A great debut novel, I look forward to reading more from Kate Eberlen.

I must say, I'm very disappointed to add this to my DNF books. I've read about 150 pages, which has taken just over two weeks - which is very unlike me. I couldn't get into it. I found the two main characters, Gus and Tess to have very sad and dull stories, when I was expecting a romance. Maybe it turns into more of a romance later on, but for now, I couldn't get through it. .
1 🌟 for now. Maybe I'll be able to get into it on another try.

An interesting concept but hampered by two things: firstly, the main characters are passive, boring, and kind of awful people. (Tess is mostly just passive and boring; Gus takes "passive and boring" to a level where it becomes passive-aggressive and he's actively harming the other people in his life via his complete self-absorption.) Secondly, there's really nothing drawing the two characters together except a narrative device - the reader figures out that they're Meant To Be but beyond depression and vaguely artsy thoughts, they have nothing in common; there are no moments where we think "Gosh, if only he were with Tess" or "if only she were with Gus, this would be working out entirely differently." They're just two people trundling along leading not-very-interesting lives and we know, because this is a book, that eventually they're going to get together. Every chapter or so there is a shoehorned coincidence - "oh look there is
SpoilerGus's wife
," "oh hey that was meant to be
SpoilerTess' room
