This content is definitely not for a ya audience and while I understand the need to be real about history this story filled me with despair. I know not everything is sunshine and daises, history often isn't, but this seemed to be improperly handled.

It was also very graphic without warning. I've read other books that handled this topic in a way that does not make light of the situation or shy away from the realities of it, but they also did not provide crude play by plays. This seems as though it was done rather brash for the sake of making it "more real," but I don't think it actually did that.

Many an author have written very real, raw, honest, heart-wrenching stories about horrific things without it feeling like this.

This book will challenge any reader. It shines a light on historical events and cultures and pain and segregation. It also manages to shine a light on love and hope. It was truly painful to read at times, but it has left me thankful we continue to move away from that type of darkness. It is an important read especially on an event that so few remember.

This is the second book I’ve read in my lifetime (so far) that has absolutely broken my heart into a bazillion pieces.

I decided to read Out of Darkness as my February pick focused on reading 12 banned books this year, and I’m literally sitting here sobbing and speechless.

This book is set in the 1930s in East Texas, and the storyline grapples with a lot of deep topics: racism, forbidden love, sexual abuse, physical abuse, school explosion, and more.

I was completely enamored by the more lovable main characters - Wash, Naomi, Cari, Beto, and the nice supporting characters. But if you’re looking for a warm and fuzzy story, this ain’t it.

However, if you’re looking for a powerful, layered story that sheds a light on some deep topics - this is it. Just grab your tissue box too.

TW: all the trigger warnings…

The ending was spoiled for me and it was a bit too graphic for me.
