People loooove this book, and I guess I can see why. But for me the old-fashioned style was too long-winded and an absolute chore to read, especially considering its 800-1100pp length (depending on edition). I don't like to be Mr. Contrarian giving a negative review of a beloved book, but to my tastes it was a big ol' missed opportunity. Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with Clarke's stylistic influences.

Nothing against the author or the book. I simply learned that this style of writing is not for me.

It took forever for me to really get into this book, but the slow build totally paid off at the end!!
