This was such a unique read. It is very different from any of the other dystopian reads I have enjoyed. First off, flies. Exactly. Once you know what I cam talking about you will know why I couldn't stop reading because you will be the same.

The characters are brilliant. They have great personalities and really fill out a variety in the interaction. I loved the main character. She is strong, persistent and willing to take chances, throughout er journey. I found her interesting and full of spunk.

The story itself was really easy to get into. You had moments that left you guessing, wondering what was happening and what would happen next. You also had a lot of depth to really make it a read that you just had to continue.

Overall, I think this is a great book to check out, if you are into dystopian reads. It is fantastic, fun and really different.

What can I say. Almost a week after I finished the book I'm still in awe. The book is different. Strange even but at the same time so good. Just wow.

Few times I had to stop reading and I literally scratched my head because I was so bewildered. I didn't understand what I was reading but at the same time I was so engrossed with the story being so different I wanted more. I wanted to finally understand.

Lolani, the main character, can understand flies. Yes, FLIES. That idea made me want to know more and didn't let me stop. Her quest will make you laugh, cry and feel other emotions. I was basically crying and sobbing with joy when the book ended.

The story was refreshing and so different that it gives you a break from other paranormal books. I would say it makes you really think to understand the concept. And I like that. I like that a lot.

5 stars from me. Well deserved for a first book.

Unlike any other book I have read, it was definitely strange but in a good way. At first I honestly wasn't sure I was gonna continue to read it. A girl who can talk to flies, weird green lights and soul stealers with lanterns?? Some parts are a bit confusing but I know this is only book one. Can't wait to read the next to see what happens.

After losing her parents Iolani moved in with her cousins and her grandparents. From the outside, they were your typical family but Eleanor and Iolani were special. Eleanor was a happy child but she glowed until one terrifying night at the lake, Iolani with the help of her buzzing friends tried to save her but Eleanor lost her sparkle. Trying to make it right, Iolani stumbles across something far worse and knows that to help her cousin she need to fight against a force that is strong, bigger and more powerful than her. With her horse and a comatose Eleanor, she treks through the country to find her only true friend, an old-school friend who she knows will help her.
At the beginning of this book I was so confused, I had not a clue what was going on, but this got me intrigued to read more. The author had a knack of telling a story, every bit that was confusing at the beginning was explained throughout, making this an addictive read. Iolani was very family orientated and knew what she had to do, even if it meant putting her own life in danger. The use of flies as the magical beings to help Iolani was unique and I loved the way she got the flies to work with her, protect or even save her. With near death experiences, kidnapping, and an epic journey across the countryside and desert made this action packed and a fast read. The back story of the loss of her parents was moving and you could feel Iolani’s grief and pain, but I think this made her a stronger girl and her being 15 made it more exciting especially when she came across someone bigger and stronger than her.
Book 2 and 3 are already out and I hope I get to find out more about Iolani’s gift and what has happened to Mr Chong and the green lanterns.
I never judge a book by its cover, however I think this cover is gorgeous and shows just how talented the author is, as she designed this herself. If you want a fantasy book with a difference then read this, you will not be disappointed.

Let me start off with saying what a delightfully different book! While I had read the summary of the story, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and I was led on an adventure! It was a quick read and for the most part, I was completely entertained! There were moments where I felt a bit lost, but I was able to catch up pretty quickly and the story line kept on going, albeit a bit strangely. I'm still not completely sure I believe the flies aspect of the story line, but it definitely gave the story an edge that I haven't found in another book.

Flying Away was a book that was well written as the author's first book, with delightful and mysterious writing and detailed, complex characters that were eager to keep the story going. Iolani, and her cousin Eleanor, were a delight to follow along on their journey. I loved how Mango, Lani's mare, was a big part of the story. She was a great and well liked addition. The author did a magnificent job in developing the characters and the story line to the point that it was a refreshing new take for young adult readers! The men with the lanterns were something else that I wasn’t expecting and I have to say that they were definitely on the disturbing and sinister side with an uncanny ability to creep me out. Well written, Caroline Gill!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the dystopian/fantasy genres and looking for something that is on the new side. The interesting take on the young adult adventures that wasn't your normal dystopian novel. It is the start of a fun new series that is sure to keep your attention!

I gave this book 4 stars!
