Finally decided to see what everybody loves about this guy...if you like a book to read like the script of, say "Tango & Cash," then you should plow through the shallow trenches of this predictable story. If, however, you're like me & prefer your detective novels more meaty & satisfying, I'd go somewhere else.

Someone is kidnapping the wealthy children of New York billionaires. But he's not doing it for ransom money! He's quizzing these kids on the political state of the world, and if they get an answer wrong, they get killed! Det. Michael Bennett is teamed up with FBI Agent Emily Parker to find out who is behind the rampage of terror, and what exactly is motivating him, because it isn't money!

I quite enjoyed this. Of course, the plot and characters are as thin as plastic, but the pacing is top notch. It's an exciting read from start to finish. Short chapters mean you can race through it. If I hadn't been so busy in the last couple of weeks at work, I would have read it even faster! I'm still not sure what benefit there is to having Michael Bennett having ten kids in this series. I can't remember any of their names from book to book! Half of them don't even get name-checked in this one, I'm pretty sure!

But as far as fast-paced, action thrillers that let you switch your brain off, this hit the sweet spot!

Michael Bennett is back full force not only handling his newest case involving a series of brutal kidnappings and with the help of a very pretty FBI agent the search leads them in circles, no end in sight.

Bennett finds himself struggling with not only the case, but his suddenly complicated love life and the prospect of a future that involves a new mother for his children. It doesn’t help matters and keep his head as clear as he would hope when things are home before even more complicated.

This was another great adventure in the Bennett family and I look forward to more stories and the continuation of Michael’s personal life as he searches for what his future holds.

Privilege Has a Cost

James Patterson Michael Bennett bk 03 Worst Case

NYPD Detective Mike Bennett continues to go up against the crazies of NYC, and I love it. I also love his pseudo partner, FBI Special Agent Emily Parker, and hope this isn't the last we see of her - either in this series or another.

I always love seeing the interactions in the Bennett household, including Father Seamus Bennett and Mary Catherine "MC." They often lend some joy and general human feels, and perhaps a little fun chaos, to what would otherwise be a very heavy storyline. There's also some jealousy rearing its head. Hmm... I look forward to seeing what comes of that.

What's happening in the case Mike's pursuing is tragic, for certain. The mechanisms that a madman uses to send a message are disturbing, but it makes for a riveting, fast-paced book. I liked how it was told with victims', the killer, Mike's, and more points of view.

I borrowed a copy of the audio book. The narrators are Bobby Cannavale, Orlagh Cassidy, and John Glover. I love the duet narration and I really enjoyed the various actors.

Enjoyed listening to this one in the car. The narrator does a great job with nice sound effects. Not sure if I should follow the character in sequence.
