By the River is a collection of meditative glimpses into Harry Hodby's life. Harry lives in a small town with his brother and dad and goes through all the typical small town coming of age experiences. He learns about loss, love, sex, hardship and friendship.
Using sparse, evocative language and silences, Herrick builds a community that is authentic and rich in detail. The magic of verse novels (this one in particular) comes from all that is unspoken, in the spaces after the line ends and understanding lingers.
It's beautiful, it's touching, and the poetry of the language and form makes you want to read and re-read, slowly and slower.

Life is hard here. Periodically the river rises and floods this little Australian town.
A beautiful poem of a book.
