Before reading this I was really reconsidering the whole 'Ultimate Comics' completest thing. I've been pretty underwhelmed by the last few books I've read, but this one puts me back on track for the Avengers/Ultimates at least - as long as its under Millar.

'Blade vs. The Avengers' is a good set-up, pitting the superheroes against the united vampire clans. Blade and his prey are essentially unchanged, his first appearance dating from the failure of imagination that was 'Ultimate Marvel Team-Ups'. That lack of difference and my general antipathy towards Fury is what knocks this story down a few pegs.

Steve Dillon's art was a great choice, it's gaunt and modern and avoids the polish that other 'realistic' artists use. The story is fast-paced and leads to an ending that makes me want to read further. You really get the sense that maybe Millar is finally be allowed to think beyond a six-issue series again.

The first Ultimates run is among my favorite in comics both in terms of art and story telling and I'll always love Millar for creating that work. This is not that. It feels cheap and half assed and the artwork boring at best and unfinished at worst. At the same time, as ready as I was to be done with this title, the ending felt rushed.
