All Fours. Door: Miranda July. 
 
Je hebt goede boeken, heel goede boeken, magisch goede boeken en daarboven komt nog een categorie (een hele kleine) die bovenaards goed is. Te ingrijpend om in woorden te vatten. Ik probeer het toch. 
 
Na de immens prachtige cover volgen er 413 perfecte pagina’s die je van je sokken zullen blazen, je doen huilen, hardop schateren, onderlijnen, geil worden, nadenken, herlezen, met je vrienden delen, laten dansen, masturberen, scheiden, trouwen, een kind krijgen, een motel boeken,… Na die 413 pagina’s ben je een ander mens. Voorgoed. 
 
Bij een July liggen de verwachtingen hoog. Torenhoog. - Net als bij een Mills’ (haar man). -  Met All Fours lost ze die verwachtingen met de vingers in de neus in. Wat het voor mij extra goed maakte is dat het verhaal over een vrouw van 45 gaat (ben ik ook) die in de perimenopauze zit. Tegenwoordig gaat het daar gelukkig meer en meer over, en dat is een heel goede zaak. Ik las er al een paar non-fictie boeken over maar de beste informatie haalde ik misschien wel uit dit fictieboek. 
 
Er staat roman op de cover maar het hoofdpersonage deed me heel hard denken aan die July die wij (fans, denken te) kennen. Dus in mijn hoofd zag ze er zoals haar uit. Zeker tijdens het dansen. 
 
Een niet-gegenderd-kind, non-monogamie, biseksualiteit, sexy dansen, de (peri-)menopauze, seks met iemand anders, seks met jezelf, tampons, traagschuim matrassen,… July heeft het er over, laat je er anders naar kijken, geeft je er zin in, doet het je begrijpen, maakt dat je er naar begint te verlangen. Met heel veel geweldige humor, tederheid, warmte, openheid en psychologisch inzicht brengt ze met All Fours hulde aan het leven van een vrouw die ‘op de helft is’ maar ook aan de vriendschap, het moederschap en bovenal het huwelijk. 
 
All Fours is een filosofisch, maatschappijkritisch, queer, spiritueel, empowerend alternatief voor de Bijbel. Een nieuw soort bijbel voor een soort mens die anders is. Opwijkend (positief afwijkend). Het wijst je de weg naar jezelf. Zo hard onder de indruk; een grote fan! Eén van de beste boeken van 2024! 
 
Er is maar één klein minpuntje (dat niets met Miranda te maken heeft): je merkt dat het door twee verschillende mensen vertaald is (Gerda Baardman en Lydia Meeder) aangezien ze niet dezelfde woorden gebruiken (bvb monniken-mogendheden). Jammer en een beetje lastig.

Miranda July is just my kind of weird. I love a book that takes you so many places you never expected and every one is a delight. More books like this please!

I found this to be somewhat of a rollercoaster, quite difficult to get into but about half way through really picked up and then dwindled off again.  I’m not leaving this book with anything particularly profound to say about it unfortunately.

While I often found the main character irritatingly over-the-top and self involved, July writes compellingly and well about the peri menopausal period of an American, well-off artist woman and all the qus about identity, life, love and sex that it brings. I guess some people have to only be concerned with self so that the rest of us can learn about ourselves. I hope to avoid her narcissistic downward spiral in menopause in pursuit of her next artistic project. It taught me how to be non-plussed if my child turns out to be trans however.

This book began as something ridiculous. I found the protagonist's internal world bizarre, but very entertaining. I had approached it as a light, summer read and so enjoyed that it was so easy on the mind. But it surprised me by becoming something deeply emotional and moving on female desire, and what it truly means to come into it. I had no idea that post-menopausal life was experienced by so many women as much more mentally peaceful than previous stages of life, and that made me happy. I thoroughly liked our insatiable protagonist, even if the post-break up depression felt excessive when it was introduced into the plot a second time, but I suppose it was making a point there about transgenerational mental illness etc. The moments where the protagonist is preparing for a sexual encounter were always so satisfyingly written, I loved the little beautifications and preparations (buying "beauty foods": avocado, dark chocolate etc). They made her very human. The Davey plot line was just so bizarre but rewarding in the end. Highly recommend this startling and funny book.
