This is Sullivan's best book yet, and Farilane might be my favorite character he's written. I just with I had more time in this era of the Empyre, and with Farilane. I had the same issue with Nolyn. I just wanted more time with them, because they're standalone and the pacing feels rushed.

This book doesn’t have the typical Sullivan plethora of characters, with multiple plots diverging into a grand finale. Rather, it focuses on one character throughout the book, which unfortunately makes it less interesting and open for plot twists. I liked the final 20-30% of the book, as more characters were introduced, which increased it from three to four stars.

This might be one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. You need to be invested in Sullivan's universe but if you are the pay off here is jaw dropping, tear and rage inducing... just... incredible.

I can't believe there's one more book to go - going to be a hard wait

My husband after I finished this book, "I haven't seen you have a reaction like that to a book in a while." Me - crying like a snot-nosed baby - saying "it was so sad but SOOOO good!!!!" Then, having the realization that Michael Sullivan is my favorite author and my husband saying, "See! I introduced you to your favorite author!" I tease him all the time about not being able to read (he can totally read but chooses not to). He downloaded two free audiobooks called The Jester and Professional Integrity by Michael Sullivan back in 2016 while he was working for Texas Parks. He liked the books so much that he started listening to the audiobooks for Riyria and eventually recommended the series to me. I was hesitant at first, but the leap has been totally worth it! Farilane is the absolute best book I've ever read by Michael Sullivan. Especially having read Riyria Revelations, the ending hits so hard 😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️

I thoroughly enjoyed both Farilane the book and Farilane the character. She's smart and driven and logical (and felt quite Neurodivergent). She's the type of character that figures things out too fast and makes her judgements based on her innate sense of justice, no matter how hard they are. I wish I had the ability to help her out of her inevitable ending, yet, her story loses most of its power if it does not end the way it does.

I cried at the end. It wasn't the first MJS book to make me cry, but it was the most bittersweet. The ending really makes you feel for a not-quite main character we see throughout all the Elan series and question when sacrifices are really worth it.
