Some folks think an author can build tension by not telling the reader key things. That may be possible sometimes, but not here. This book is just tedious despite its shortness. I was going to say "brevity" but that just doesn't seem right for a book that moves so slowly.
As a heavy reader of science fiction, I am always annoyed when a mainstream writer tackles a theme that has already been thoroughly explored in SF. As seems to be the case here, the mainstreamer too often proceeds as if no one had ever thought about until now.
This story slowly explores one aspect of a certain thing, in a small section of a not-quite-ours society that is otherwise left unexplored. That's the author's privilege, but I don't have to like it. Other authors have given us all that is here, plus a look at the society around the characters, how it came to be and how it is stressed by the situation.
With my reading background, I figured out what was going on very early. Maybe everyone did, and maybe the author expected us to.
Conclusion: this is a little bijou of a story, and I found it dull.

Ishiguro has skill in crafting a compelling narrative in the mundane. But that is all this book was, mundane. The ‘magic realism’ that underpins Ishiguro’s writing lacked greatly and the books end point became clear in the first section. The redemption of this book lies in his characters. Not a bad read. But not a book I would recommend to a friend.
