The art is great, but this is a joyless sequence of events, with random heroes literally falling from the sky to be used in repetitive fights. There’s really no story to speak of. Would not recommend.

I don't know what it is with my desire to continually read Jeph Loeb. Maybe it's that he rose to the top of the mainstream comics game on the merit of a single solid work (The Long Halloween) and a particularly excellent artist pairing (Tim Sale), even though he's not a particularly good writer. Maybe it's that he keeps getting fairly big projects that have long-standing ramifications on the characters. Or maybe I'm just an asshole and love cutting people who, in my eyes, don't deserve their high standing, down. There is a strong possibility of this last one.

Anyways, this particular Loeb romp is pretty bad. It'll keep you turning pages, but none of the dialogue pops, its core mystery - which is drawn out to the point where it isn't even solved here - is a dud, and there are character jumps that come out of nowhere. Even Ed McGuiness's art, which is usually a delight, is lacking its usual spunk.
