First Thought When Finished: Loved the characters, loved the setting, but wished they had gotten together a little quicker!

What I Loved: Parable, Montana is a fantastic little town filled with a quirky group of people. I fell in love with the town, the people, and the fact that LLM wrote in an animal rescue center. I also loved that LLM wrote in a stepdad that loved his stepdaughter and was willing to take her even though he wasn't married to her mother any more. I love when non-traditional families are featured.

What I Liked: Slade and Jos were a great couple. They had a great chemistry and I was thrilled when they got together! I also really liked the side story of Slade/Hutch because they needed to work out some of their brother issues.

What made me go huh?: It took to long for Jos and Slade to get together. I am all for a slow build but 80% is a bit much.

Final Thought: This was a solid start to a new series and I am looking forward to more stories from Parable, Montana.

This was just ok but what I needed after reading the valley of amazement. Probably won't seek out another book by this author.

Big Sky Country by Linda Lael Miller
Grade: C

“A pretty flush glowed under Joslyn’s cheekbones, and her eyes made him dizzy, in a psychedelic, Lucy-in-the-sky-with-diamonds kind of way. Slade, who’d never taken an illicit drug in his life, was suddenly high.”

Joslyn Kirk hasn’t been to Parable, Montana since she sunk out of town in the dead of night years ago with her mother after her stepfather was found guilty of scamming the whole town. In high school Joslyn was the spoiled rich rodeo and homecoming queens and she never gave Slade Barlow, now the town sheriff, the time of day. Joslyn is back in town trying to right her stepfather’s mistakes and to find some sense in her life but all she keeps finding is the hot sheriff who she can’t stop thinking about no matter how hard she tries.

Sheriff Slade Barlow has a lot on his plate: he’s running a county, taking care of his stepdaughter, his father who never acknowledged him has died and left him half of everything. Slade never expected anything from his father and is shocked at his inheritance but his half brother wants nothing to do with him and demands to buy his share of the ranch. To top it all off Joslyn Kirk is back in town and she has somehow gotten under his skin. With so much going on in his the life the last thing Slade needs is a romantic relationship but he can’t seem to stay away from Joslyn and finds that they just might be the best thing for both of them.

Big Sky Country is the first book in a new series by Linda Lael Miller set in Parable, Montana. Parable is a small town with lots of residents with big personalities. Not everyone in Parable is happy about Joslyn being back in town and a lot of them want nothing to do with her because of her stepfather. I felt very bad for Joslyn because she was trying so hard to make everything that happened okay even though she was just a teenager when it happened and nothing to do with the scam. I felt that Joslyn was very lost in this book and seemed to have no idea what to do with her life which was very sad at times.

I loved Slade and his stepdaughter Shea. I really wish that more of the book could have focused on their relationship. I loved what I read about them but felt that things never got resolved and I wanted more out of their relationship. Slade is a great character and I enjoyed reading about him. He struggles with all of his relationships but he never goes out of his way to be mean or malicious to anyone. I didn’t always agree with him but I did really enjoy him and I hope he will be in future books.

Slade and Joslyn have a crazy relationship and my biggest problem with this book was that it took forever for them to get together. There were a few times when I thought we would at least get a kiss but it was a very, very long tease before things got moving. I think the book could have moved faster and not been as long as it was which became very frustrating at times. I got very impatient at times and stopped caring about what was going on because it seemed that nothing was going on. I liked Slade and Joslyn but I’m not very crazy about them as a couple. For some reason they didn’t work for me. Maybe it’s because it seemed to take forever for anyone to make a move but I wasn’t a huge fan of their relationship.

This book is a very cute contemporary romance and I did enjoy a lot of it. I complained about it taking forever for anything to happen but I still found myself breezing through the book and unable to put it down because I had to see these two get together. I really enjoyed a lot of the side characters and I am hoping that the next book will be with Slade’s half brother Hutch who I actually really liked. I think this series could be very good and I look forward to seeing what happens in Parable.

The "First Lady of the West," #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller is back with a new series about Parable, Montana-where love awaits. The illegitimate son of a wealthy rancher, Sheriff Slade Barlow grew up in a trailer hitched to the Curly-Burly hair salon his mother runs. He was never acknowledged by his father-until now. Suddenly, Slade has inherited half of Whisper Creek Ranch, one of the most prosperous in Parable, Montana. That doesn't sit well with his half brother, Hutch, who grew up with all the rights of a Carmody. Including the affections of Joslyn Kirk, homecoming queen, rodeo queen, beauty queen-whom Slade has never forgotten But Joslyn is barely holding her head up these days as she works to pay back everyone her crooked stepfather cheated. With a town to protect-plus a rebellious teenage stepdaughter-Slade has his hands full. But someone has to convince Joslyn that she's responsible only for her own actions. Such as her effect on this lawman's guarded heart.(less)

Great first book in a new series from Linda Lael Miller. I found this to be a very quick read. Read most of it on the way to my sister in-laws.

The beginning of this book almost had me putting it down. It took me forever to be able to tell the two half-brothers, Slade and Hutch, apart. It wasn't until I started seeing their families around them that their names really started to stick for me - which made some things a tad confusing at first.

Now once I got that little piece of information down, the story was quite good. It was told in a slow, easy pace that seemed to reflect the life in Parable, Montana - a small town where everyone seems to know everyone and things take a long time to change. What I learned of the town was amazing, makes me want to visit to get away from the city and find a little peace and fresh air - and stare at all the cowboys.

The romance between Slade and Joslyn was very slow to build up. But that is what real life is like - it takes time to get to know someone all over again and make the decision to open your heart. Joslyn took a huge risk returning to Parable after her step-father did a lot of damage to a lot of people. She wants to fix what he did - but things aren't always as easy as they seem and she knows that.

Slade is dealing with his own family drama - the kind this small town will be talking about for ages. But he doesn't really seem to care about what the town thinks or talks about. He's going to sit and thing about things before making any decisions. That's just the type of guy he is. So when he sees Joslyn for the first time in years, he's taken aback. Especially by his body's reaction to her.

Theirs was a sweet and slow romance that you really just fell into to. It was a lazy afternoon of lounging in the sun just to enjoy it. I look forward to visiting Parable again to see what everyone is up to and find out who is next to fall in love.

So many things drove me crazy about this book.

The first of which is going to cause me to rant about the continuing ridiculousness of women achieving “O” by the first touch of Hero’s magic member. Please, stop this. Between this, the slut shaming, and tons of weird useless details about the feeding and care of pets, I almost stopped reading multiple times.

Also, the relationships were so bizarre.

Why not adopt the step daughter?
Why be reluctant to bring her to stay with you when you think of her as your own?
Why question whether daughter can stay because of a potential relationship? I felt the worst for the stepdaughter.
The brothers race? Such a strange stupid thing.
Also, we never really understand why their dad left the ranch to both sons when he never acknowledged the existence of Slade.

Even though these and several other little things drove me nuts, I finished the audiobook, so I guess that deserves 2 stars.
