I have enjoyed Darynda Jones's other series so I thought I would give this one a try and I did not regret it. There are many elements that appear in Draynda's other books that are here as well, the broody man that has secrets, the quirky character that speaks her mind, and a few odd characters that will continue to pop up I'm sure. It has an interesting premise and I look forward to seeing how it progresses in the next book.

Thank you, Darynda for another great series! I’m loving Defiance and Annette! You’ve taken all my favorite things and put them in here! Journal making, moscato, and kilts! So fun!

Magical realism with some comedy, sign me up! I love this in audio form. The narrator is awesome. This is a good cozy, low stakes, magical realism story! You fall in love with the main character! I love that she is middle aged! Great book, I highly recommend 🙌✨️

I'm going to give this a tentative 4 stars.

There was a heck of a lot that I liked about it - the banter between Deph and Annette, her family, the mythology and world-building, and of course, the delicious Roane.

But Deph reaaaaaally grated on me at times. There were moments of complete and utter TSTL, and at one point I was half-hoping she was going to get killed over her procrastinating on the protection spell, just so she could cross over to the other side and Ruthie could tell her to her face that she's fucking stupid.

Seriously, that power in the hands of someone so fucking stupid ... It becomes hard to imagine how that could possibly be good for anyone. Darwinism needs to pass that power to the next person, or at least, it felt that way at least half a dozen times in this book.

But I really enjoyed everything except that, so I'm hoping that improves from here on out, and giving it 4 stars.

This is just a fun easy read, but be prepared to go immediately into book 2!

The hero is unintelligent, keeps stalling, acts without thinking. Everybody worships her but there is no real reason for it. The story ends with a clifhanger which for me an absolute let down. I am not sure if I want to continue reading the series...
