One of those books with really great premises and smooth prose that are easily overshadowed by horribly one-dimensional characters and poor plot decisions. This book has a lot of hanging threads that don't get resolved, and all the exciting things only happen for the last quarter of the book, barely making up for the first three-fourths of the story that we spent building up to the action, making the payoff rather lacking and letting us wait for more.

The characters you're supposed to resent you end up liking (Amanda, Vanessa, and LM didn't deserve any of that, though I really hated Casey, and the men were quite replaceable), and I ended up hating our main protagonist Renee. She has this not-like-other-girls portrayal for no good reason and is definitely the worst one there. This idea that she only survived because she was queer was disappointing; she, out of all the contestants, should've been taken out for her sheer lack of solidarity or willingness to get to know the others, who were actually not mean to her. The older ladies being in on it was also something I wanted to know more about, and the blogs and the rumored historical stories didn't help much in explaining exactly what happened, though that's essentially all you get.

Overall pretty sad about this because the first 1/3 of the book had a lot of promise in anticipation for what was to come had me so excited, and the gore was so good I needed more of it. If someone wrote a story similar to this but gave more justice to the characters and the final act, sign me up.

it’s not meant to be taken seriously and if you don’t you’ll have a good time with the book.

2.2 Rounding up. This book is lauded as a “one of a kind queer horror comedy,” and in some ways I see how that statement is true- but that also doesn’t mean the book is good. I think I expected more queer representation beyond love letters from side characters and “The Bachelor” knock off show contestants kissing each other on a dare. Every character in this book is a horrible person and it feels like the lesson isn’t about growth, but rather that being self aware of your crappy behavior leads to a longer life. There is so much senseless and gory violence that I certainly didn’t read as comedic in any sense and the women this book centers around are so catty throughout the entire story, and not in a way that’s entertaining, but in a way that feels stereotypical and reductive. Maybe it was a commentary on “The Bachelor” type reality shows and their contestants/producers, but it felt like it was written by someone who just doesn’t like women. The reason I rounded up to ⭐️⭐️⭐️ is because of who ended up “winning.” Spoiler alert- it’s not the reader.
