Otto just loves these McMullan "I'm ____" books. This one gets super specific naming tools that a Fire Truck carries. Very strong Harry Builds a House vibes (iykyk; my mom remembers being so sick of reading ALL the steps and parts of house building to my young brother, who couldn't get enough!) with the super detailed naming of tools, items, and components.

I am a huge fan of this series of books - which I didn't realize was a series until recently. This is a great book about fire trucks. Funny and informative and a great read aloud.

8/2015 - read several times
July 2017 - we hadn't revisited this in a while, and Ben was really into all the tools and how they're used.

Will appeal to fire truck-obsessed tots, so it's worth having in a library collection...but I didn't think it was a great book. I don't think I'd read it in storytime because of the frequent boisterous sound effects and the long lists of tools and other firefighting gear. Also, I thought it was weird that there weren't any firefighters; the truck was a one-man show, doing everything from speeding to the fire to (telekinetically??) manipulating the tools to break down doors and hose out the flames. Not for me, but it'll circulate well.

I think boys who like fire trucks would love this, but not anyone else. My two biggest problems are (1) that it is too slangy (e.g., gimme, 'em, talkin')and (2) assumes someone knows what all the tools are. There is a 2-page spread with 10 tools & names & says "can you match 'em? Well, no, I don't know what a spanner wrench. Or Halligan tool on the next page. You can figure most out, but a little glossary or chart at the end would have been helpful.

A fun story about a firetruck! I liked that after all of the tools were named they were also used. Having read A LOT of picture books about firefighters and firetrucks, this is my favorite.
