It was a hard book to read because I only later figured that it was a translation from Italian to Spanish and you can tell, because I don’t think it’s very good (and I studied translation).

The story is a bit messy, the chatacters are not likeable and it didn’t captivate me. I read it because I remembered enjoying the movies when I was younger but I didn’t like this. Plus, the way men perceived and spoke about women on this book was…. Not good, at all.

I loved the Netflix show Summertime. The quirkiness of the characters set against a beautiful Italian backdrop easily captivated my attention, and the meandering storylines, coupled with the often erratic interactions of the main characters, are what led me to research how and where this story came about. In the end, I found out that the show is loosely based on a series of books — books that had yet to be translated into English — so I eagerly waited in anticipation for the first book to arrive.

The book and show work really well together in supporting the main feelings and themes represented by each. I typically identify with liking the book better than the movie or show, but this is one time where I think they both work really well together to complete the bigger picture. There are some updates to the characters and settings in the show that are not reflected in the book, but overall it is very easy to make the connections and to see how pieces of the story were meant to unfold.

That being said, both the book and the show have moments that ask the audience to not take themselves so seriously, to get lost in the surreality of a beautiful setting, wonderful food, and the infinite feelings of our youth —to remember what it’s like to be ridiculously, naively, and childishly in love — and sometimes that lends itself to incredulity. However, first love is supposed to be over-the-top-ridiculous, and it rarely if ever ends the way that we expect or want it to. With that in mind, I can’t wait to see and read where Babi and Step end up next.

When I heard about this teenage love story set in Italy I was excited. Add that it is the inspiration for a Netflix series? I was all in. However, it ended up being a miss for me. The characters annoyed me - they seemed too spoiled and unrelatable. There were also so many characters and side storylines that got confusing and took away from the love story.

Thanks to Grand Central Publishing for the gifted copy of this book.

One Step To You by Federico Moccia

Thank you to @grandcentralpub for sending me this book! After such amazing reviews and popularity I was excited to read this one.

Unfortunately I think it does not translate well into English (from Italian) and I did not enjoy it. There are a lot of characters who seem spoiled and obnoxious. The writing and dialogue is choppy. I’m curious if it’s better as a show!

I hope you are all having a lovely weekend! We have a 3 day weekend with zero plans. So ready for warm weather and less restrictions!

How are you spending your Sunday?

I just couldn't get into this one. I really appreciated the story but I felt super far removed from the storyline and just couldn't picture this group of rag-tag boys and the idea that a man would go this hard to get a girl, it just didn't sit right with me even though I can see the love story within. Solid 3.

I have no idea why this is so popular. Babi is so annoying.
