Ugh. Someday I will DNF books with no shame. I really couldn’t find anything redeeming about this book. I honestly can’t believe it was written by a woman. Nate is whiny and childish. He thinks he’s Gods gift but he’s pretentious. If he were a real person I would absolutely hate him in real life.

I was thoroughly impressed with the thoughtful and smart prose of Waldman, however I do think there was a certain lack of plot woven throughout the entire book. Nate was especially thorough in his psychological reasoning behind each choice he made, however there wasn't much else to feed into how or why he actually made those choices. Maybe I prefer plot over prose, but still, something felt lacking. It wasn't very relatable for a topic and a persona that everyone should be able to relate to, in some way.
Misogynistic man baby Nate has a relationship that he ruins. He then dates a twee girl and what a shock, happily ever after. I seriously question if the writer has ever had a relationship in her life. I also wonder how this book got so many positive reviews.

It can be hard when you hate the protagonist of a book but it makes for great discussion. We all know a Nathaniel and he's terrible but whatever, he's entertaining to read about.
Just good. Fun. As I was reading it I wondered if I'd have the fortune of unearthing some relationship revelation, but actually it's just kind of like "hey guys, different things happen, it's all good. It's all experience." And theeeeen.... And theeeeen? Nope, nothing else. Just that, nbd.
he had a bad habit of initially zeroing in on one or two things he liked about every new girl he found himself interested in, as if to justify his attraction.
nathaniel p. is kind of a self-absorbed, shallow idiot. this book is tough to get over with.
as for the love affairs, you can't help but wonder why they're attracted to him in the first place.
the writing is pretty boring and exhaustingly detailed.
there's nothing horribly wrong about this book that i can't stand it, but there's also nothing incredibly brilliant about this book that actually makes it worth reading.

Overall this just seemed boring. Some insights from Nate's brain about dating women were certainly interesting. Overall though, Nate's a bougie snob. There is no plot to this novel in anyway. Meh.
what happened in the last chapter, guys? WHAT HAPPENED. I think I'm tiring of the 21st century novel of manners in NYC thing.
BUT-- the book seemed accurate about straight relationships happening currently with people in their late 20s.
I am ambivalent about the last chapter.
